Chiet

The middleman of their society, Chiet are identified by their altogether mundane level of skills and mental ability. They are smart and fit enough to keep from falling into the Dek caste, but have otherwise no outstanding skills that would elevate them to Avora. They are often, like Yasi, considered the most driven of the four adult castes as well as the most greedy for Chiet want wealth and notoriety of Avora and Endal and will do nearly anything to obtain it. A Chiet's skill set can range anywhere from the basic fisherman to a cook, from a nurse to a bird keeper. They are, by and large, a typical Commoner.

Mentality

Chiet do not get to enjoy the same wealth that Avora and Endal do; they make enough each season to get them through with a little to spare on the side. As such, this often affects their outlook on the rest of the realm, feeling that it is their right to share in the bounties of the upper caste members. A chiet commonly works alongside certain craftsmen which only fuels their desire for advancement. It also enables them to improve and show off their acquired skills to the Avora. This greed does not commonly flare against upper caste members; it does, however, make individuals feel entitled to bullying Dek, venting their own frustrations of ranking upon the less fortunate.

Housing

Housing for Chiet is simple. Like Avora, Commoners live in the Darniva Common Rooms in a single room cave with a twin bed, two drawer dresser, one chair table, coat hooks, and four shelf bookcase. Any other amenities must be purchased. These caves are not available for expansion; furthermore, there are no Chiet Family units.

Seasonal vs. Annual

Because of the two primary locations of work Chiet may serve in, there is a distinction made in the jobs they have. Some positions are strictly seasonal, requiring individuals to return to the Valintar at the end of that jobs season for job reassignment. Other positions allow for work the entire year. For example, many of the Thunder Bay workers are purely seasonal and must return to the city when the Bay freezes for reassignment. Usually, these members will fall into roles in related work, such as the Kitchens, Craft Gallery, or Aeries, but occasionally, individuals will be required to work in a position that doesn't always focus on their accomplished skills.

Jobs

  • Birdkeeper
Chiet birdkeepers work in tandem with Avora falconers in the maintenance of non-Wind Eagle birds. Usually, however, they will oversee the care of all non-bird of prey avians in the various group mews of the city. They will often take on groups of 3-5 Yasi non-apprentice to train in the maintenance of non-bird of prey. They are responsible for familiarizing birds with humankind as well as acquiring new birds. Decent trapping skills are required. Working with Avora Falconry Masters, Master Birdkeepers are also the go-to for Endal who may be concerned with their Wind Eagles health and are not sure of treatment.

  • Fisherman
Working around Thunder Bay, the fishermen are in charge of catching most of the marine animals that end up in the Processing Centre in Thunder Bay. These Chiet are skilled in fishing and usually skilled in navigation as well, which is used to avoid dangerous rocks as well as to find fresh fishing grounds. Some also have additional skills such as trapping, which can be used for catching crustaceans, and swimming. Fishermen employ a number of techniques to make their catches including trawling with the use of nets.

Most will have a basic knowledge of medicine as well as some measure of social skills. Some nurses have some herbalism knowledge from handling herbs for remedies and it is usually these individuals who end up apprenticed to herbalists.
  • Baler
In charge of creating the targets in the archery ranges, the work of balers is not highly specialised. These balers gather hay for targets and bundle it together, painting the targets on rough material to attach to them. These targets are then used in the various ranges from the Bent Arrow all the way up to Top Notch. There are not many balers at any one because the demand for new targets is not high enough for the employment of a large number of Chiet.

  • Bathhouse Attendant
Bathhouse Attendants are Chiet that work in the Tisuma Baths. Their job is to see to the needs of those who come to the public baths, whether that be help with washing or a massage to soothe strained muscles. Such attendants are required to be naked while in the baths but are not subject to abuse from upper castes as would be expected. Attendants are respected and some of the more skilled ones are highly sought after, causing fights to break out for their time. Such attendants limit their services to half a bell per client in order to keep the peace.
  • Game Scouts
These Chiet are skilled in tracking and land navigation but they don't possess the other skills necessary for hunting. These scouts are used by both Avora and Endal to locate game prior to their hunts. Scouts find big game and big animal groups and inform the hunters where to find them in order to maximise the amount of food brought back to the city. Their input helps the hunters to form hunting parties to go after big game and large animal groups. These scouts face the dangers of the Unforgiving, often with little or no protection, meaning that this job is more hazardous than many of the other Chiet occupations.

Gardeners ensure that plants receive nutrients and light and harvest food and medicine plants at the appropriate times. They keep the gardens free of weeds and fertilised but they do not have the capabilities to treat plant ailments or increase productivity without the aid of the Avora in the Gardens who have a better understanding of such things. Gardeners are a simple work force for maintaining the gardens but play a vital role in Wind Reach, caring for the plants that are necessary for the survival of the city’s citizens.
  • Teacher
The educators of the Yasi, teachers are important in passing on knowledge to the youths who may later become Avora or Endal. Teachers play an important role in overseeing the development of promising youths and helping them to hone their skills for apprenticeship by introducing them to Avora instructors. These teachers have basic knowledge in a range of topics from history to falconry. Their job is to give the Yasi a chance to find skills they wish to develop and so they do not focus on any one subject more than another.
  • Bartender
A limited position, the only permanent jobs are held by the bartenders of the Inclement Weather. Seasonal bartending jobs are available in Thunder Bay from Spring to Fall but these Chiet are reassigned during the off-season. Two bartenders are employed in the Inclement Weather all seasons but on a rare occasion a third may be assigned during a particularly busy time. Bartending requires a good level of leadership and socialization skills as well as skills in planning and knowledge of drink mixing.
  • Harvester
A seasonal worker, harvesters are in charge of gathering fruit and medicinal plants from various locations in the Kalea mountains. The White Owl Endal flight transport these workers to these locations on a volunteer basis to reach the furthest trees, otherwise these harvesters must reach harvest sites on foot. As a result of this need to hike or trek to different locations, mountaineering is an essential skill and climbing is a desirable skill for reaching fruit in trees. This job is gruelling and usually involves more commuting than actual picking and gathering. These Chiet are prone to various ailments during cool and damp weather and fainting spells and heat stroke in hot weather. There are a number who die every year on doing this occupation. During winter, harvesters are reassigned to other occupations.
